How does Acupuncture help fertility?

There are many theories as to how acupuncture works to benefit fertility for both women and men.  It has been used for thousands of years in traditional medicine, and is now more readily accepted by both parents to be and by their physicians.

Acupuncture has been shown to:

  • Boost circulation to the reproductive system. Acupuncture points are chosen for their ability to increase healthy flow of blood and energy to the uterus and ovaries.
  • Help to harmonize cycles in the body. By helping to regulate the endocrine communication in the body; hormonal and menstrual systems return to a healthier balance.
  • Improve ovarian and uterine health.  Acupuncture treatments can help boost overall health, but in particular can focus on improving ovarian function. Treatments may also help increase the thickness of uterine lining, benefitting a healthy implantation.
  • Reduce effects of stress on the body. Stress is now being linked as a contributing factor in many cases of subfertility. Acupuncture has been shown to naturally help increase the release of endorphins (our "happy hormones"), while also helping to reduce the over-production of cortisol (one of the "stress" hormones). Acupuncture treatments are a relaxing, restful time for your body and mind to regenerate.

Will this help me get pregnant?

Our goal is to help support your goal.  We will work with you to get your body in the best possible place in order to conceive and hold a healthy pregnancy. Each individual's story is different, and many factors may influence the outcome.

How many treatments will I need?

Each person's fertility situation is unique, but we usually suggest a minimum of 1-3 months of regular acupuncture treatments in most cases.  Some clients may benefit from longer treatment plans.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Our acupuncture protocols involve minimal needling with a gentle technique.  We believe acupuncture does not need to hurt for it to be effective.  Most of our clients do not feel any discomfort and find the treatments extremely relaxing.

What is Arvigo Abdominal Therapy®?

Arvigo Therapy® is a non-invasive abdominal massage based on traditional Maya abdominal therapy.  It is also known as the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy® and often referred to as a type of fertility massage.  For more information please visit our Arvigo Therapy page.

I'm already working with a fertility clinic - can you still help?

Yes, our therapies work to support you at any stage of conventional fertility treatment.  Whether you are just starting to work with your fertility doctor, or are doing a medicated cycle, IUI or IVF. Our treatments are customized around each step of the process

Where do the needles go?

Acupuncture needles may be placed at various points on the body - it depends on the overall goal of each treatment plan and where you are in the cycle.  Even for fertility acupuncture, the points are not always the same for every person, or even for each treatment.  There will likely be points used on the hands and feet, head, torso and back.

Is fertility acupuncture covered by my insurance?

At this time Acupuncture by an R.Ac is not covered by OHIP, but it is covered by many private health care plans. Check with your provider to see if acupuncture by a Registered Acupuncturist (R.Ac) is covered under your extended benefits.  We offer direct billing to your insurance but also provide a receipt so that you can make a claim yourself. In Ontario, treatments by an R.Ac can be claimed as a medical expense on your income tax.
